Examines the theory and practice of small group communication, with a focus on developing productive interaction in teams, meetings, negotiations, and other group settings. Topics include issues of consensus building, group leadership and effective decision-making through communication practices.

Examines nonverbal communication in a variety of settings and cultures. Topics include concepts of nonverbal communication, application to actual situations, and their relation to the entirety of the communication process. Students gain competency is communicating non-verbally with others.

Examines the role of gender in shaping behaviors. Topics include aspects of language, culture, social roles, orientation, conflict, and identity. Students examine the role of communication in shaping, reproducing, sustaining, and challenging the socially constructed meanings of gender.

Examines the history, purpose, channels, content, technologies, policy, and regulation of international communications systems. Topics include differences in media infrastructure between nations and regions; international trends in the development, patterns in news, entertainment and information flows, and the emergence of global communication.

Focuses on writing for print, broadcast and new media. Topics include reporting strategies, interviewing athletes, sports jargon and statistics, stylistic considerations and story telling techniques. Students will write recaps, hard news and various features for related to sports at a variety of competition levels.

Provides students with a primer on the ethical implications of current mass media. Topics include the journalistic code of ethics, the impact of medium on validity and credibility, corporate social responsibility and how to make choices as an ethical communicator. Students will gain competencies in ethical creation and consumption of media.

This course teaches principles of visual communication in print and electronic publications. Students gain design and production skills through extensive application of these principles to a wide variety of publications.

Examines current approaches to digital journalism. Topics include media convergence, citizen journalism, viral news, clickbait and fake news, hyper local journalism and current digital trends and innovations. Students will write and revise journalistic pieces suitable for publication in print, broadcast or online distribution channels.

Examines journalistic approaches in broadcast news. Topics include the process of producing a media rich newscast, the realtionships between staff and crew members in various media organizations, and the practical elements of electronic news gathering. Students will create broadcast ready stories for use on television, radio or digital platforms.

Introduces students to the process of communicating messages with video. Topics include messaging strategy, aesthetics, audience analysis, pre-production and audio/video capture, post production and editing. Students will create individual and group video projects using professional audio equipment and video cameras.
