Advances students' understanding of argumentation techniques to develop analytical abilities, use of data, reasoning, and evidence to support arguments. Course topics include advocacy, models of argumentation, logic, and debate. Students will practice skills in constructing, delivering, and analyzing arguments in formal and informal situations.

Examines interpersonal communication theories, processes, functions and contexts. Topics include initiation, development, maintenance, repair, networking, and disengagement in interpersonal relationships. Students develop communication competency in navigating families, friendships, romantic partners, and workplace relationships.

The course examines practical and theoretical aspects of intercultural communication with focus on developing constructive dialogue and sustainable relationships. Topics include issues of identity, verbal & nonverbal language, ethnocentrism, stereotypes, and overcoming tensions and conflict between people from different cultural backgrounds.

Introduces basic news gathering, reporting and writing focused on print journalism. Topics include current news and events, Associated Press style, credibility and ethics in writing and reporting. Students will gain experience through writing and revising articles for publication in student media organizations.

This course introduces students to the principles, practices, applications, and ethics of communication research. Students will learn the basics of research methods and design as well as the nature of interpretation, presentation, and use of research findings.

This course examines conflict in interpersonal, organizational, and international contexts where hierarchical relations of power are prevalent. Emphasis is on the historical, socio-cultural, political and ethical dimensions of conflict development and resolution in everyday life. Students develop skills in conflict analysis, mediation, management, and transformation of relationships.

Examines theory, research, actions and proposed solutions to influence decision making at the local, state and federal level. Topics include strategies to promote positive change, protecting or changing rights, gaining eligibility for services or to assist in removal of barriers and limitations. Students develop advocacy strategies.

Examines how persuasion operates in moments of social advocacy in the public sphere. Topics include defining persuasion, understanding different vantage points and applications to forms of social expression (such as electoral campaigns and social movements). Students will develop competencies for navigating persuasion ethically in everyday life.

Examines the way powerfully persuasive rhetorical messages pervade daily life in popular culture. Topics include popular culture and high culture, rhetoric and communication, and the roles of culture and stereotypes through a range of media including film, sports, music, video games, advertisements, television and technology.

Examines theories of leadership and introduces students to the wide range of communication practices involved in the academic study of leadership. Topics include theoretical and experiential approaches to effective leadership communication. Students will analyze their personal leadership styles and develop leadership communication skills.
