Explores the traditional principles and practices of journalism, including history and theory. Topics include functions of the press in a democratic society, structure and nature of the press and media's relationship with government and the public. Students will analyze past and current journalistic work in America and beyond.

Explores sport communication and media involvement in modern sports. Topics include advertising, public relations and media with specific attention to blogging, broadcasting, social media, online and print publications. Students will examine traditional and non-traditional sport media in a global society.

Explores the fundamental components of strategic communication. Topics include how to communicate purposefully, how to persuade and how to do so ethically according to specific circumstances and stakeholders. Students will practice the basic concepts and principles of public relations, focusing on approaches, uses, tools and methods.

Explores American mass communication. Topics include historical development, organizational structure, functional and operational characteristics and contemporary uses of mass media. Students will review the impact of books, newspapers, magazines, movies, recordings, radio, TV, internet and new media in American society and beyond.

Topics include communication theories related to behavior change, normative messaging, information processing and management, and related communication competencies in health related settings. Students will identify, analyze and apply concepts to create normative PSAs.

Explores conversation on controversial subjects with emphasis on recognizing conflict and engaging in constructive modes of interaction. Topics include civil discourse as the foundation for democratic institutions, sustainable relationships and collaborative decision-making. Students will construct, arrange and deliver oral presentations.

Introduces students to technology and techniques used in creating content for communicating specific messages. Topics include current technology for content creation, theory related to media aesthetics and composition, and how to use technology to create content to communicate messages. Students will create content suitable for a mass audience.

Topics include interpretation and application of data dealing with media content, delivery, audiences and effects, and the application and use of audience analysis in producing messages. Students will analyze audiences and best practices in planning messaging campaigns.

The goal of this course is to introduce students to the basics of business and professional communication in the US and in global companies. The course includes an introduction to research and interview skills, written and verbal professional communication, and collaboration in the workplace.

Introduces the process of contemporary rhetorical theory the mid-twentieth century forward. Topics include contemporary sources of rhetoric such as non-governmental organizations, social movements, contemporary trials and advertising campaigns. Additional attention will be paid to the emerging non-Western traditions.
