In this course, we will focus on four main topics: the nature and varieties of feminism; the case for feminism in the U.S.; the relationship between feminism and social-justice movements involving race, sexual orientation, and gender identity; and matters concerning sexist language, dating etiquette, etc.

This course explores the meaning of life, distinguishing significantly different versions, and critically examines several different answers, both religious and secular, to these questions. The emphasis is on helping students to develop and defend their own answers. We may also touch on related issues such as whether human life is absurd.

The philosophy of mind is a sub-discipline of metaphysics concerned with the fundamental nature of mental phenomena. Various theories of mind will be discussed: i.e. dualism, behaviorism, functionalism, etc., along with related issues of personal identity, mental content, mental causation, and consciousness.

This course attempts to answer the question: Should we believe what science tells us? It includes a critical inquiry into the nature of scientific theories and explanations, as well as an investigation into methods of theory confirmation. Other issues may include whether theoretical entities are real or only useful fictions, reductionism, etc.

Explores the nature of the Sun, the planets, and the major moons. Examines the motions of the Earth, moon, and the planets and their effects on the appearance of the sky. Includes constellation identification through the use of the planetarium or software.
