This introductory course uses geographic perspectives to examine the economic, political, cultural, and environmental aspects of the human experience. The course emphasizes the concept of place and spatial relationships in examining root causes and sustainable solutions to socially relevant issues, from local to global scales.

Political, economic, and ethical decisions related to the environment are viewed in historical and modern context. Personal and structural solutions to current environmental issues are also addressed.

Physical Geography is focused on the thin surface layer of Earth where land, air, and water meet. It is an interdisciplinary study of the distribution of physical phenomena and the processes that interact to generate geographical patterns at the surface of Earth. Interactions among atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere are emphasized.

This introductory geography course analyzes the root causes and sustainable solutions to socially relevant issues and problems. Cultural, economic, political, and environmental aspects of these issues will be addressed, as will the diverse ways of living and thinking that are rooted in cultural, ethnic, racial, gender, and social differences.

This course emphasizes the nature and distribution of natural resources in their role as support systems for humans and their activities. Historic and contemporary approaches to conservation are examined. Topics considered include energy, soil, land use, water, wildlife, forestry, and conservation ethics.
