SOWK 4341: Field Experience I

Prerequisites: SOWK 3331, formal admission to the social work program; corequisite: SOWK 4332. Enrollees must be social work majors. Field Experience I is the first of two opportunities for the student to integrate knowledge and insights developed in the classroom into practice by working directly with the client system under careful supervision of a social worker in a human services agency, either public or private. Field Experience I provides a structured learning environment in which the student can demonstrate an understanding of the values and ethics of social work and begin to develop the skill to apply them. The Field Experience is 200 hours of direct practice experienced in the fall semester of the senior year. Three credit hours.

This course will focus on the concepts underlying models of program evaluation as well as methods of measuring program effectiveness in human service organizations and agencies. Students learn how to write effective mission statements, goals and objectives; use program logic models as framework for evaluation; use quantitative (but not statistical) assessment techniques; write effective evaluation reports; and apply evaluation findings to program improvement.
