This course is an introduction to the principles and applications of geospatial science (remote sensing, GIS and GPS). Fundamental concepts include electromagnetic radiations, map projections, basic computer science, data formats, map-reading and map-making, etc. Practical exercises include field data collections using GPS, photo-interpretation using image processing and GIS software packages. Basic field methods, including field notes, topographic maps, measurement of structural elements, field safety, illustration, field mapping, and the use of GPS for field work are discussed and practiced. Use of computers for processing geologic field data and analytical data, and integration of field data into a simple Geographic Information System. Computers are used for the production of reports and technical illustration. This course will fulfill the department requirement for computer literacy. Prerequisites: GEOS F214 or GEOS F262 (may be taken concurrently).
