A course designed to increase the student's awareness and functional knowledge of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices. AAC is the supplementation and/or replacement of natural speech and/or writing using aided and/or unaided symbols (e.g., Blissymbols, finger spelling, gestures, ideographs, logographs, manual signs, pictographs) and the related means of selection and transmission of such symbols. This course offers a survey of the issues that address the individual needs and requirements of those that utilize AAC devices. The student will be exposed to those issues that must be addressed in order to provide appropriate and efficacious services.
