Introduction to the art and architectural monuments of Italy through direct observation and on‐site lectures. Art, architecture, civic planning, and their methods are discussed from the era of antiquity. Exploration of major architectural, painting, and sculptural achievements in ancient Italy, including the Greek and Etruscan influence, The Roman Republic, Imperial Rome, and Early Christian Rome. Designed to follow ART 256, this course includes travel to Italy, a journal, and a final project.

Study and application of vector graphics in electronic design. Emphasis on computer and software applications for image and type layout design. Develops and refines concepts using traditional media for graphic design.

Basic concepts and applications of electronic imaging hardware and software. Emphasis on the importing and digital editing of photographic images in both black-and-white and color. Artistic expression and experimentation with image form, content, and design are encouraged. (Formerly PHO250)

Introduction to web design with emphasis on typography, imagery, color, and layout. Focus on the unique processes and considerations of designing for the web with emphasis on user interface and user experience as a means of creating appropriate and navigable websites.

Design and development of a portfolio for entry into the art and design field. Emphasis on concept development, execution of artwork, and the representation of identity through the design of a personal logo and resume.

Practical work experience in a graphic design firm, advertising agency, or other graphic design related organizations. Required work-related objectives are predetermined by the student, a faculty adviser, and the employer. Course work includes 225 direct-contact hours.

Study of the variety of advertising avenues designed to be used at the point where the purchase can be made. Diverse projects encourage freedom to experiment with new design solutions using a variety of materials and techniques. The point of purchase design must not only be extremely creative, but also reflective of the production demands and costs.

Focus on the study and design of three-dimensional packaging. Commercial design solutions using a variety of materials and techniques will be explored while also considering production demands and limitations. (formerly ART310)

Study of design as it relates to signage, wayfinding systems, exhibition graphics, and environmental advertising. Explores the unique problems associated with form, space, and user experience, and challenges students to produce scale models of their designs that display acuity in the areas of message, usability, and environmental appropriateness.

Art of the twentieth century, emphasizing the interrelation of painting, sculpture, architecture, graphic arts, photography, and computer-generated art during major art movements of the 1900s: avant-garde art, cubism, surrealism, abstract expressionism, pop and op art, minimalist art, performance and virtual reality experiences. Includes the study of the scientific, political, economic, social, and literary dimensions of the period.
