AMT 277: Engine Head; Porting and Polishing Modifications

Introduction to the technical skills needed to increase the volumetric efficiency of an engine by increasing the size of the head ports and polishing the surface casting. Applications include matching the manifold runners to the head ports, and determining displacement of the combustion chamber. Course work includes using a bench head flow tester to pre-test and post-test the heads. Safety is stressed as well as the proper use of power tools.

Topics include chassis dynamometer operation and use; SAE correction factoring; vehicle performance baseline testing; air cleaner element testing; ignition timing adjustment and testing; computer flash performance updating and evaluation, cold air intake design and testing; extensive exhaust testing; cam timing adjustment and testing in conjunction with the use of adjustable cam gears; cylinder head porting and flow bench evaluation.

Topics include camshaft installation and induction testing; cylinder head tests of different flow characteristics as a result of porting, camshaft selection, or combustion chamber volume; forced induction with main focus on turbo-charging; drive train modifications necessary to handle the increased engine performance; and drive train modifications, limited to flywheel, pressure plate, clutch material, or torque converter stall/flash performance.
