3.00 Credits
This course will examine the concept of multiculturalism and how it relates to the Early Childhood Education classroom. Through dialogues, readings and projects, students will be able to assess their beliefs, teaching environment and style - in order to identify changes and promote respect for differences that accompany children and families.

5.00 Credits
(Formerly CHE 101-Fundamentals of Inorganic Chemistry) General chemistry for non-science majors. Completion of CHEM& 121 and CHEM&131 fulfills chemistry requirement for many health science majors (nursing). This course covers the fundamentals of chemistry which includes: structure of atom/molecules, thermodynamics, stoichiometry, equilibrium and acid base chemistry. Prereq: MATH 098 or better or placement test above MATH 098 or by instructor permission. Lab fee. Transfer class.
-
5.00 Credits
Structure, properties and reactions of various organic compounds, including hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and amines. Students will use this information as foundation for examining complex compounds found in living systems: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Laboratory activities extend lecture concepts and introduce the student to analysis and separation techniques. Prereq: CHEM& 121 with a 2.0 or better. Lab fee. Transfer class.
-
5.00 Credits
Preparatory for science major chemistry sequence for students without chemistry experience. Lecture-only format, basic atomic structure, bonding, equation balancing and mole concept, and stoichiometry. Prereq: MATH 098 with a 2.0 or better. Transfer class.
-
6.00 Credits
A three-quarter sequence introducing basic concepts of chemistry. Lab included. Covers structure and bonding, chemical reactivity: physical measurement, stoichiometry, structure of matter, gas laws, intermolecular forces, solutions, chemical kinetics, equilibrium, acid/base, thermodynamics, redox, electrochemistry and selected topics. Prereq: CHEM& 139 and MATH 098 with a 2.0 or better. English proficiency at the ENGL& 101 level highly recommended. Lab fee. Transfer class.
-
6.00 Credits
Continuations of CHEM& 161, second quarter of three-quarter majors general chemistry sequence. Chemistry principles, structure of matter, atomic and molecular theory, the elements, quantitative relationships, nuclear chemistry, aqueous solutions, kinetics, chemical thermodynamics, oxidation and reduction, electro-chemistry, periodicity, equilibrium systems, qualitative analysis and organic chemistry. Lab included. Prereq: CHEM& 161 and MATH 098. Lab fee. Transfer class.
-
6.00 Credits
Continuation of CHE 162, the final quarter of three-quarter sequence. Topics include chemical equilibrium, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, nuclear chemistry and a variety of instructor-selected special topics. Prereq: CHEM& 162 and MATH 098 with a 2.0 or better. Lab fee. Transfer class.
-
4.00 Credits
Structure, nomenclature, reactions and synthesis of the main types of organic compounds. Prereq: CHEM& 163. Lab fee. Transfer class.
-
3.00 Credits
o First of a two-quarter series; a survey of basic principles of biochemistry and molecular biology, emphasizing broad understanding of chemical events in living systems in terms of metabolism and structure-function relationships of biologically important molecules. Designed for students majoring in chemistry or biochemistry and for students interested in careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy or medical technology. Prereq: CHEM& 243 with a grade of 2.0 or better AND one quarter collge biology, either BIOL& 160 (formerly BIO 101) or BIOL& 211 (fromerly BIO 201.) Transfer class.
-
5.00 Credits
(Formerly CHI 101 ? Elem Modern) Intro to the standard language, emphasizing correct pronunciation and basic structure, with oral practice and structure skills. Emphasis on systematic study of the phonetics (Pinyin) and basic grammar. Covers everyday expressions and vocabulary, and background on history, culture and customs. Intended for students who have not previously studied Chinese. Recommended: Eligibility for ENGL& 101 (C).
