Under faculty supervision, students will design and carry out a vigorous scientific study of a specific problem in agriculture. Written and oral presentation of the research are required. Prerequisites: AGR 201 and BIO 202. One to three credits.

Introducing fundamental design, the student investigates the elements and principles of two-dimensional art. Six hours, three credits.

Students are introduced to three-dimensional design problems through the sculptural methods of assemblage, modeling, carving, and casting. A variety of materials and techniques are encountered. Students research and report on sculpture and sculptors, create a variety of three-dimensional art works, evaluate, and present their works. Six hours, three credits.

An introduction to art and artists, the language of art, art media, and methods. Emphasis is on understanding, appreciating, and discussing art in its cultural and historical context. Students read, research, and view slides in a lecture/discussion format. Three hours, three credits.

A basic course in drawing skills and concepts. Students are introduced to various drawing media including pencil, charcoal, ink, color, and mixed media. The elements and principles of art are introduced and practiced. Visual and aesthetic awareness is developed through the creative problemsolving process. Six hours, three credits.

Art mini courses acquaint students with important techniques, skills, principles, or ideas that are not covered in the regular art curriculum. These concentrated courses present topics in depth and, while they may be offered by Ferrum College faculty members, are often taught by guest artists (credit not applicable to art major or minor). One credit each.

This survey course explores computer application in art, design, and graphics. The primary applications may include computer illustration, graphic design, logo and typography design, image manipulation, commercial art, and related topics. The course emphasizes creativity, composition, and aesthetic quality. Prerequisite: ART 101, 104. Six hours, three credits.

Based on competencies developed in ART 104, this course emphasizes the refined relationship between design and drawing and the expanded possibilities in drawing using different styles. Emphasis is placed upon individual interpretation of class assignments, and developing a portfolio including slides that exhibit versatility and proficiency in drawing. Prerequisite: ART 104. Six hours, three credits.

An introduction to the fundamentals of clay as an expressive material. Students are introduced to various hand-building techniques, including pinch, coil, and slab, as well as glazing and firing methods. Visual and aesthetic awareness is developed through the creative problem-solving process. Six hours, three credits.

An introduction to the basic elements and principles of painting. Students experience various painting media including oils, acrylic, watercolor, air brush, Alkyd, pastels, collage, and mixed media. The course is designed to develop basic problem-solving skills in painting. Students are exposed to both contemporary and traditional styles of painting through class demonstrations, slides, videos, and art exhibits. Prerequisite: ART 101, 104. Six hours, three credits.
