    A student may enroll for one half-hour or one hour-long private lesson each week for a semester, and receive one or two credit hours respectively. MUSC 191 indicates the first semester of study on a particular instrument; MUSC 192, the second semester of study on that same instrument; 291, the third semester; and so forth, up to MUSC 492, which indicates the eighth semester of study, or the equivalent of the final semester of a four-year course of lessons, on one instrument. Registration requires a special application form which may be obtained only in the office of the department chair. A $150 fee is required for each credit hour. Music majors and minors are exempt from fees for lessons taken on their primary instrument.Enrollment is open to Westminster College students only.

    Significant topics are explored in any of the many sub-disciplines of music. Examples of such courses include: Songwriting, Conducting, Beethoven's Nine Symphonies, The English MadrigalStyle and Performance. Prerequisites will vary with course content. May be repeated for credit.

    This course will examine popular music from a variety of genres from a music-theoretic standpoint. Students will explore existing (and devise their own) strategies for analyzing the rhythmic, harmonic, melodic, and timbral aspects of a vast repertoire that has largely been neglected in music theory and analytical studies.

    This course will explore music from the British Isles between 1875-1925 in conjunction with literature from the same time and place. Featured composers: Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Holst, Bridge, Ireland, Bax, Butterworth, and Clarke. Featured writers: Hardy, James, Conan Doyle, Forster, and Woolf.

    From Pythagoras to Xenakis, musicians throughout the centuries have studied and utilized the mathematical properties and structure of music. This course will explore topics in the intersection of mathematics and music, including acoustics, tunings, harmonies, rhythm, and form. There are no strict prerequisites; however, it would be helpful for students to have some background in either music or math (but not necessarily both).

    This course is designed as an intensive study of sight singing for vocal majors and minors. With the sole purpose of developing masterful skills in singing a new piece, students will sight sing diatonic melodies with chromatic alterations, intervals in either direction, major and minor scales, and chordal structures. Modulation and chromatic exercises will be sung using solfeggio and number systems. Students will sing repertoire from the major periods in music history, including tonal and atonal works. Also included in this course will be a review of all key signatures and scales, and the analysis of melodic structures with an emphasis on non-harmonic tones. Prerequisites: Aural Skills I or the consent of the instructor. This course is repeatable for credit

    The Westminster Chamber Singers will rehearse for their performance tour to China. The choir will rehearse two separate repertoires. One repertoire is to prepare solo choir concerts. The second repertoire is for orchestral concerts with mass choirs.
