Launching a new venture requires special ways of thinking and acting, as you learned in other courses in this minor. But, with those, you have just begun. Leading a startup through a period of rapid grwoth requires a highly developed set of skills. In this course, you will learn the leadership skills, the financial discipline, the recruiting and hiring practices, and the performance management practices you must develop in order to succesfully navigate this stage of growth of a startup.

Explores threats and opportunities related to legislative, cultural, economic, and technological considerations in business today and their impact on current and long-term decisions. Prerequisites vary with course content.

Introduces the rational decision-making process and applies it to individual decision-making and organizational decision-making. A number of techniques are discussed and applied that promote creativity in the decision-making process. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques are used, and barriers to effective decision-making are discussed. This course is open to all majors.

This course explores threats, opportunities, and strategic implications related to conducting business in the unique region of the American West, from both historical and contemporary perspectives.

This course is will examine successful companies in Seattle and Portland from a marketing and operations perspective. The integration of the marketing and operations functions is critical as companies compete in challenging and changing environments. Companies such as Starbucks, Amazon, Boeing, Intel, and Nike will be examined through course work and onsite visits. The onsite visits will allow students to see the successful integration of marketing and operations in action. Students will also have the ability to network with successful Westminster alumni employed by the companies visited. Students will pay a fee of ~$1800 for this course for airfare, hotel fees, ground transportation within each city.

The key to creating environments where individuals thrive lies in a leader's ability to connect their mind their heart in a way that increases the ability to focus, see clearly, enhance creativity, and bring out the best in others. The path to this ability is through the practice of mindful leadership. Recent neuroscience research has demonstrated mindful leadership develops a person's ability to focus, better understand issues and opportunities, connect with others, and motivate ourselves and others. This class will teach the fundamentals of leadership as well as the key principles of mindfulness, bringing these concepts together to practice ways to improve leadership capability through the practice of mindfulness.

Participants will travel to Western India to explore and understand social, cultural, economic, and environmental determinants of health through coursework, field trips, and service learning activities, primarily in the village of Wai, Maharashtra. Students will engage with local schools, women's groups, and community centers to advance community health and social entrepreneurship, primarily through the art of storytelling. Students and local community members will share and record their exchanges through written, oral, or visual stories that will be the basis of a multimedia reflective project that students will submit after the trip. In addition to immersion and service work in Wai, students will gain a broad appreciation for the range of Indian culture, history, and health conditions by visiting sites of cultural importance. Trip leaders have expertise in global health, Indian culture, literature, and storytelling, and social entrepreneurship. The transformative learning that takes place through active listening and learning with community groups and first hand observations of the broader pursuit of health and wellbeing in India will shape each student's personal philosophy of global citizenship.

In this course students will learn business writing. Topics include preparing documents for a variety of business audiences (e.g., customers, managers, employees, board members), designing and organizing business documents, using several business writing formats (e.g., reports, memos, letters), using appropriate tone and correct grammar, and increasing conciseness. In the course, students will have many opportunities to write business documents, receive feedback from the instructor and their peers, and revise their documents based on the feedback they receive.

This course brings successful entrepreneurs from the community into the classroom. Each entrepreneur will discuss critical issues relevant to his or her business: developing the idea, validating the concept, planning the venture, raising funds, building a team, launching the company, sales and marketing, customer service, growing the business, and the keys to success. Students will relate the key principles taught by each entrepreneur to research and theory they have learned in other courses, and then apply what they have learned to the creation of new ventures.

Every organization has a culture. This culture can either enable or hinder organizational success. In this course, we will work with a number of tools, case studies and host guest lecturers to help you understand and assess an organization's culture and identify areas for improvement; think strategically about the possibilities of organizational culture change; identify specific action steps you can and should take to move your current or future organization along the journey of being a high-performing organizational culture, and reflect upon which organizational cultures may be a good fit for you. This course will include a discussion of Bill and Vieve Gore, their personal journey and an examination of the genesis and development of W.L.Gore & Associate's culture and how other organizations are now focusing on culture as a fundamental element.
