This course explores a specific area of study in organizational communication. Topics will be announced in advance.
Prerequisite:
COM 398 requires prerequisites of C or higher in COM 209 (or SPK 208 for internal and external transfer students), COM 211, and COM 215.

1.00 - 6.00 Credits
Research, creative projects, reports, and readings in communication studies. Students must apply to advisors one semester in advance of registration. Up to 6 credits may count toward major requirements.
Prerequisite:
COM 399 requires approval of the department chairperson, junior or senior standing, and prerequisites of C or higher in COM 209 (or SPK 208 for internal and external transfer students), COM 211, and one of the following: COM 213, COM 214, or COM 215.

3.00 - 15.00 Credits
This internship provides students the opportunity to gain vital hands-on work experience in the communication discipline that cannot come from classroom experience alone. Credits earned vary based upon the amount of time spent on the job. All internships must be approved by the Department's Internship Coordinator and must meet federal guidelines. This course counts as an applied area course rather than as an upper-division course in the COM major. Please see the department website for more information.
Prerequisite:
COM 400 requires prerequisites of C or higher in COM 209, COM 211, and one of the following: COM 213, COM 214, or COM 215; one 300-400 level COM course with a grade of C or higher; enrollment as a COM major or minor; and a minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA.

This course is designed to integrate students' learning experiences across the Communication Studies major. Students will be asked to bring together their understanding of communication theory and research with their oral communication skills. Topics examined vary by instructor.
Prerequisite:
COM 490 requires prerequisites of C or higher in COM 209 (or SPK 208 for internal and external transfer students), COM 206, COM 211, COM 213, COM 214, COM 215, and COM 309.

The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to the basic skills required to conduct an instrumental ensemble.

A continuing study of instrumental conducting. Extensive score study explores phrasing; relevance of instrument basics such as string techniques and bowing; woodwind, brass, and percussion technique; and idiomatic challenges. Honing of gestures that reflect this deepened understanding of instrumental scores is included. A strong emphasis is placed on rehearsal technique and musicianship training, treating music as sound and art.
Prerequisite:
CON 312 requires a prerequisite of CON 311 or CON 321.

This course focusing on advanced conducting techniques focuses on extensive score study, relevance of instrument basics such as string techniques and bowing, woodwind, brass, and percussion technique. Honing of gestures that reflect this deepened understanding of instrumental scores is addressed. A strong emphasis is placed on rehearsal technique, error detection, interpretation, and treating music as sound and art.

CON 313 requires prerequisites of CON 311 and CON 312.

The study of conducting choral music and developing interpretations that influence gesture decisions.

The purpose of this course is to acquire advanced conducting skills and choral techniques through an exploration of music from various historical style periods. This includes analysis of music from the conductor's perspective, discovering and solving technical challenges in choral and choral/orchestral literature, and designing rehearsals to facilitate work in various genres with the appropriate musical forces.
Prerequisite:
CON 322 requires a prerequisite of CON 321 or CON 311.
