INS 150: Guitar & Ukulele Foundations

This course was designed for music education majors and presents the fundamentals of playing the acoustic guitar and ukulele. Students will learn the basics of rhythm, scales and chords as applied to the performance of acoustic guitar and ukulele. Music styles to be covered include folk, blues, classic rock and contemporary popular. The mission of this course is consistent with the Music Education Department and curriculum.

In this course, students will learn about non-pitched percussion, pitched percussion, the cultures, instruments, and performance practices from West Africa, Cuba, the Middle East, Brazil (pandeiros, surdos), and the Caribbean. Students will learn how to incorporate these instruments and drumming styles into their music therapy practice and develop rhythmic dictation and improvisation skills.

Students with little or no experience will learn the basics of rhythm, scales, and chords as applied to the performance of acoustic guitar. Music styles to be covered include folk, blues, classic rock styles, and contemporary popular tunes. Students will be encouraged to perform in solo and duet settings. Students will also be encouraged to sing as well as play the guitar for their song performances.
