    An extensive seminar/workshop in which the student director enhances his/her knowledge of both the art and craft of directing. Though the emphasis is primarily the Raymond Laine One Act Festival , or similar one-act structures, the aspects of craft and the organizational tools necessary for the evolution of the dramatic process will be studied. Prerequisites: THEA 210/THEA 211 and permission of instructor and department chair. Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be able to: (1) Apply the fundamentals of directing. (2) Analyze scripts. (3) Utilize strategies of communication, develop an individual communication style between director and actor. (4) Demonstrate a systematic approach to a "realistic" one act. (5) Explore some of the perspectives of some of the world's leading directors. (6) Organize and prioritize budget items. (7) Synthesize management and technical skills to direct a 30 minute one act upholding the playwright's original intent.

    The fundamentals of acting for film and television are reviewed and guidance is provided in independent research and creativity through scene study. Also included are seminars with guest lectures concerning the business aspect of the performing arts. Open to theatre performance majors, or by invitation. Prerequisites: THEA 207, Theatre Major. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: (1) Develop the skill and craft to act and feel comfortable on camera. (2) Exercise naturalness in their work on camera. (3) Further develop improv skills in auditioning for TV & film. (4) Adopt listening skills in order to react with greater ease. (5) Exercise moment-to-moment spontaneity in his or her work. Listed Topics: (1) Stylistic differences of all television genres and film. (2) Mock auditions of the different genres. (3) Exercises and improvisations for each genre. (4) Commercial monologues. (5) Situation comedy scenes. (6) Soap opera scenes. (7) Film scenes.

    A year long course with concentration on extended and stylized movement with focus on research, preparation and composition. Minimum C grade in THEA 207,208. For BFA Acting majors only or by permission. Course Objectives (1) Have a comprehension of movement for specific theatrical styles and genres (2) Define and employ vocabulary of the physical use of movement (3) Identify and use tools to research stylized movement (4) Perform as an actor text which requires a great physical demand on the actor

    This ensemble lab is an extension of the work in the current year's advanced levels in directing, playwriting, contemporary drama, and performance courses. Topics may include: Stage combat, devised work, rehearsal and performance, devised work, movement, voice, acting techniques, text, and other special topics. Prereq:THEA218 ,BFA Theatre major or by permission. Course Objectives (1) Experiment with acting, movement, writing, or directing techniques. (2) Demonstrate advanced and style techniques in acting, movement, writing, or directing. (3)Demonstrate skills in playwriting, devising text, or improvising text. (4) Combine acting, movement, text, devising, playwriting, and/or directing skills in creating collaborative performance projects. (5) Devise original text and movement based theatre in collaboration with others. (6) Experiment with technology, media, and sound in contemporary performance. Listed Topics (1) Experimental theatre.

    The actor/singer actively learns the repertoire of material available to the musical theater performer. Emphasis is in the development of a book of songs with marketable and appropriate material. Prerequisites: THEA 237, THEA 238, and BFA Musical Theatre Major. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: (1) Find appropriate repertory for musical theater auditions. (2) Organize a Book of Songs. (3) Identify marketability in the Musical Theatre Repertoire.

    The practical application of all aspects of actor training culminating in the development of musical theatre performance. Emphasis is on coachability, the rehearsal process, development of character and material and the relationship between the audience and performer. Prerequisites: THEA 237, 238, 337, and BFA Musical Theatre Major. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: (1) Display knowledge and skills sufficient to work in a collaborative setting. (2) Display knowledge and skills sufficient to perform for an audience. (3) Establish a process of creating a role from rehearsal to performance. (4) Increase the ability to be directed and coached.

    This studio is an extension of the work in the current year's acting classes. Topics may include: rehearsal and performance, devised work, special techniques, and others. Open to BFA acting majors only, or by invitation. Prerequisites: THEA 224, BFA Acting Major. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: (1) Develop advanced acting techniques. (2) Demonstrate synthesis of voice, speech, movement and acting in various styles.
