    This course is designed to prepare the Musical Theatre actor for the Acting Through Song progression: text analysis with the emphasis on an American musical. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to: (1) Dissect a classic play and its corresponding Broadway musical adaptation. 2) Examine how the composer uses the music to further dramatize a scene and advance the plot. 3) Break down the structure of a play. 4) Investigate, dramaturgically, character development(objective, super-objective, obstacle, tacktic, beat change and given circumstances) through text and lyric analysis.

    The study of the history and styles of the American Musical and its hybrids through the use of texts, musical recordings, video, television, film and archival footage. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: (1) Place the works of Musical Theatre repertoire in historical and stylistic context. (2) Increase the understanding of the collaborative process among all artists, including Actor, Director, Choreographer, Scene Designer, Lighting Designer, Costume designer through the observation of musical performance. (3) Identify the works of different composers, lyricists, librettists, directors and choreographers from the American Musical Theatre Repertoire and its hybrids.

    Pre: Technical Theatre Design and Stage Management Majors Only. Course Description Freshmen are assigned to crews as an introduction to general production techniques and procedures. Course Objectives (1) Understand how all the elements of a theatrical production are integrated during the Tech process to allow for a successful show run. (2) Appreciate the roles that the Performance and Production components of any theatre play in creating a memorable theatrical experience (3) Understand the daily routine involved in the basic operation, and maintenance of a theatrical production from the start of the Tech process through the entire run of a show. (4) Apply skills learned in other coursework to aid in disassembling the show at the end of a run.

    Course Description: Principles of Acting for Musical Theatre I is part one of a two semester course in which the student will explore the use of text, lyric and music in various styles within Musical Theatre. Prerequisite: MUS 123, MUS 124 or permission from the chair. Course Objectives 1. Analyze and perform a song from a musical through the use of text, music, vocal dynamics, lyrics 2.Apply the fundamentals of acting (objective, actions, given circumstances) to a song and a scene 3. Develop the ability to create characters from the musical theatre repertoire drawn from different genres and styles in a relationship with other actors 4. Complete a written research project based on a role from the Musical theatre repertoire

    Course Description: Principles of Acting for Musical Theatre II is part two of a two semester course in which the student will learn repertoire and explore the skills required for the various styles of musical theater as it pertains to Musical Theatre auditions. Prerequisite: MUS 123, MUS 124 or permission from the chair. Course Objectives 1. Identify various styles of repertoire 2. Demonstrate two 16 bar cuts of songs appropriate for musical theatre auditions 3. Demonstrate two 32 bar cuts of songs appropriate for musical theatre auditions 4.Establish modes of preparation and technique for musical theatre auditions

    This course expands the actor's ability to analyze, integrate, and move through character development and dramatic action with a full use of emotional and physical expression. Prerequisite: THEA 102. Open to theatre performance majors only. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to: (1) Portray complex characters with truth and believability. (2) Expand basic acting techniques to develop emotional and physical expression. (3) Expand on research in analyzing a play and a role. (4) Advance voice, speech and movement skills to achieve appropriate projection, expressiveness and theatrical size.

Prerequisite: THEA 205. Open to theatre performance majors only. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to: (1) Portray contemporary characters in realistic plays with truth and believability. (2) Expand basic acting techniques to develop emotional and physical expression. (3) Expand on research in analyzing a play and a role. (4) Advance voice, speech and movement skills to achieve appropriate projection, expressiveness and theatrical size.

    A year long course. Builds upon stage movement one with an emphasis strengthening kinesthetic skills and to explore the integration of movement and text.Minimum "C" grade in THEA 114,115. For Acting and Performance & Practices majors only. Course Objectives (1) Have an increased movement vocabulary (2) develop a movement warmup (3) Employ greater freedom in movement and range of motion (4) Connect movement skills to acting skills (5) Demonstrate more specificity in movement choices
