Students will be trained in various techniques of sound design, including recording, mixing, editing and playback software as well as script analysis and creative listening. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the program. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: (1) Define the creative role of a sound designer in the theater. (2) Create a concept and sound design for a chosen play. (3) Perform the actions necessary to operate the more complex sound equipment. (4) Apply sound and system design principles in regards to performance venues.

    An introduction to the acting/directing experience that focuses on the communication between technician and artist. The class will relate the actor's and the director's work to the technical major. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the program. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: (1) Know basic techniques of acting & directing. (2) Verbally communicate the vocabulary and familiarity of the actor's character development. (3) Incorporate and solve actor's and director's issues during the rehearsal and performance process. (4) Contribute to a collaborative artistic environment. (5) Recognize the director's needs from the actor. (6) Identify the director's needs from the technician.

    An introduction to the procedures, materials and techniques that can be used by the designer or technician in the construction of stage properties. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the program. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: (1) Analyze a script and create a props list. (2) Budget props for a production. (3) Design and create different properties. (4) Properly use material and tools specifically for properties usage.

    An advanced level production assignment for theatre productions produced by The Pittsburgh Playhouse to further the skills learned in PROD 200 and PROD 201. Assignments are awarded at the discretion of the Theatre Production Unit and will increase in responsibility from previous assignments. Prerequisites: 200 Level Production Practicum Course. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: (1) Demonstrate specific and advanced skill and craft in their area of Theatre Production study. (2) Develop resources for a professional portfolio. (3) Use materials, equipment and techniques specific to theater professionals. (4) Develop time management skills in order to meet deadlines. (5) Formulate and share concepts and ideas on show production through proper inter/intradepartmental communication. (6) Instruct, supervise and manage a crew toward the completion of a given task.

    Discussion and practical applications of techniques and methodology related to engineering a designer's concept. Students will look at design specifications, concepts designs, detail designs, and design for manufacture based in the reality of time, budget and labor. Prerequisites: PROD 113, PROD 213. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: (1) Maintain a safe, healthy work environment for all individuals interacting with the scenic components of a show. (2) Evaluate and adjust designer drawings for maximum efficiency during a show build while maintaining the design aesthetic. (3) Track the show budget, allocation of manpower and day-to-day build schedule. (4) Create a schedule for the build, load-in and strike of a show. (5) Identify the variables involved in setting a production calendar and develop ways of addressing each variable.

    This advanced level Costume Construction class will introduce the theatrical costume design and production student to sophisticated techniques in costume construction, crafts, and unconventional costume related applications. Students will learn to construct a corset/bodice and explore and experiment with non-traditional and innovative fiber based materials such as nonwovens as well as themoplastics and costume animatronics. Course Objectives 1) Recreate period appropriate corsets, under garments, and support structures. 2) Demonstrate knowledge of corset construction through the use of fabrics, tapes, boning, and sprung steel. 3) Explore, choose and apply selective innovative non traditional costume techniques. 4) Recognize opportunities for the use and application of non traditional techniques as they relate to costume construction. 5) Construct advanced 3 D forms from 2 D designs.

    This course will further the student's methods of drawing with various media and strengthen the passion to express ideas visually. Students will learn to more consciously access the creative "right side of their brain" and in turn be able to more effectively come up with creative solutions. Prerequisites: PROD 124. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: (1) Draw in various media. (2) Analyze two-dimensional works referring to the Elements and Principles of Design. (3) Create visually interesting and balanced two-dimensional compositions. (4) Draw forms with sensitivity to details. (5) Critique their own work and the work of their peers.

    A continuation of basic techniques employed by the scenic artist. Emphasis is placed on color mixing cartooning, procedure and practical application to framed scenery, and three-dimensional units. Prerequisites: PROD 124. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: (1) Draw in various media. (2) Paint in various media. (3) Analyze a painting/drawing according to the Elements and Principles of Design. (4) Compose an image on paper or canvas.
