NSET 470: Case Studies in Environmental Science

Students in this course will analyze historical and present day case studies in environmental science. They will do this by reading both scientific literature and media reports about a given case. Students will learn to understand both of these approaches to the case and to effectively communicate about environmental science. Prerequisites: NSET 120, Senior Standing. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: (1) Demonstrate comprehension of scientific literature about environmental issues. (2) Demonstrate comprehension of media reporting about environmental issues. (3) Communicate complex scientific information in a less complex manner. (4) Choose the most appropriate media modalities to communicate this information.

Students will synthesize the skills acquired in the Clinical Embalming Practicum Experience at the Pittsburgh Institute for Mortuary Science with coursework in one of the programs in Funeral Services in writing and orally. This course will serve as the Capstone course for all Funeral Services Programs. This course cannot be completed without documentation of successful completion of CL EMB at PIMS. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: (1) Participate in the embalming of a minimum of thirty (30) human remains at PIMS. (2) Perform embalming techniques to the satisfaction of the student's preceptor and the faculty of PIMS. (3) Demonstrate satisfactory skill at PIMS in handling and caring for the various embalming instruments and equipment associated with post-mortem preparation of human remains. (4) Participate in removals and dressing/casketing of human remains at PIMS. (5) Synthesize the embalming practicum experience with concepts introduced in the Funeral Services Program required courses in writing to the course instructor and in an oral presentation to their peers.
