    Course Description: This course continues the study of elementary, level 3, instruction in technical principles and creative aspects inherent to modern dance and contemporary modern dance technique. Prerequisite: MOD 132 OR INSTRUCTOR PLACEMENT. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to: (1) Identify and demonstrate the following basic modern dance concepts and principles: spinal suppleness; practical use of opposition; effective use of effort; movement stabilization and breathe support for developing strength, stamina and agility; dynamic use of central axis for balance, suspension, weight shift, fall and recovery; movement organization, and increased range of motion. (2) Identify and demonstrate basic approaches to presentation and performance. (3)Organize and execute class material with fundamental musicality and phrasing. (4) Perceive and identify strengths and areas in need of improvement to demonstrate basic ability to self-evaluate student growth. (5) Identify and write about the history and aesthetic of selected artists that make up the modern dance canon. (6) Exhibit elementary performance skills. (7) Critically evaluate their class work and the work of others.

    This course is a continuation of MOD 121 focusing on skills that develop spatial awareness, dynamic play, movement organization and strength. Musicality and functional alignment are stressed. Performance skills are introduced. Prerequisite: MOD 121 with a final grade of "C" or better. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: (1) Adopt and modify a selection of ways to stabilize and organize the body while moving and shifting weight. (2) Adopt and modify elementary exercises and movement combinations applying low-intermediate technique. (3) Adopt and modify elementary use of breath support and physical intent in a wide range of exercises and movement combinations. (4) Anticipate movement outcome in combination work with elementary-level accuracy. (5) Execute exercises and movement combinations with musical acuity and be able to improvise at an elementary level. (6) Exhibit elementary performance skills. (7) Critically evaluate their class work and the work of others.

    This course offers intermediate students experience in learning modern dance and contemporary modern dance repertory. Instruction includes learning select choreographic material. A wide range of styles and creative approaches will provide students with a diverse palette of choreography that challenges students' range of adaptability. Students will learn about each choreographer's background, historic context, scope of work, and aesthetic development. Emphasis is placed on the role a dancer must play to actualize each selected choreographer's vision and concept. Prerequisites: MOD 121. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: (1) Approach modern dance and contemporary modern dance repertoire in a professional manner. (2) Learn about various choreographers' backgrounds, historic contexts, scope of work, aesthetic development, and contributions to modern dance canon.

Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: (1) Build on intermediate level skills that stabilize and organize the body while moving and shifting weight. (2) Build on movement skills at the intermediate level and be capable of combining and reorganizing them in an articulate and organized fashion. (3) Anticipate movement outcome in combination work with intermediate-level accuracy. (4) Execute exercises and movement combinations with intermediate-level musical acuity. (5) Demonstrate improved performance skills and expressiveness while dancing. (6) Organize and implement methods for self-evaluation. (7) Critically evaluate class work and the work of others.
