I/O psychology is a subfield of psychology concerned with various aspects of people in the workplace, including employee productivity and well-being. The "industrial" part deals with personnel functions, such as analyzing jobs, appraising employee performance, selecting, placing, and training employees. The "organizational" part is concerned with the social and psychological aspects of work, including employee attitudes, behavior, emotions, health, motivation, leadership, and group dynamics. This exploration will allow students to compare and contrast the validity of various cognitive theories. This course will also explore the biological basis of behavior and mental processes as related to cognition. Further, the course will describe the main processes that serve as the foundations of consciousness as well as how these processes relate to a neurological basis for awareness, decision making and behavior.

Introduces the student to the concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics. Research needs to be summarized by appropriate descriptive statistics such as central tendency, variability, and distributions. Relationships will be studied using correlation, regression, chi-square, and other non-parametric tests. Research also needs to be analyzed by appropriate inferential statistics such as t-tests and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Hypothesis testing, sampling, significance levels, type I errors, type II errors, confidence intervals, and power will be discussed. The student will be introduced to SPSS and/or other appropriate software for performing the descriptive and inferential statistical procedures presented in the course. The approach will be on practical considerations not theoretical issues.
