In this course, learners study the organization and classification of knowledge in the liberal arts, as well as basic philosophical concepts and themes as expressed in various disciplines. Students apply philosophical concepts, and engage various methods of argumentation while considering contemporary personal and professional issues. (CAPS only; students who have taken PHI 101 may not take PHI 100)

Philosophy is the "love of wisdom" and it begins with the act of wondering. In this course, students will wonder actively as did the great philosophers of ancient and medieval times. Through reading primary and secondary, students will acquire understanding of basic philosophical vocabulary and concepts. In this one semester course, students will examine metaphysical, epistemological, aesthetical, and ethical themes which provide a firm foundation for further philosophical study. (Students who have taken PHI 100 may not take PHI 101.)

In this course, students will follow the progression of philosophy through modern and contemporary times. Students will read primary and secondary texts dating from Descartes (17th C) to Derrida and Quine (20th C). They will acquire an understanding of basic philosophical vocabulary and concepts as they trace the impact of advances in science, industry, and technology on thought in the past three centuries. This course fulfills a core requirement and stands alone; it need not be preceded by PHI 101 Introduction to Philosophy I (Pre-Socratics throgh Descartes). This course would be advantageous to students minoring in philosophy.

The Liberal Studies Colloquium enables students to see how skills needed for the 21st century job market are developed in the Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines. While examining approaches to knowledge and intellectual inquiry through selected texts, students will create an electronic portfolio with written assignments and projects that will support their academic and career development. (Prerequisite for PHI 400 Capstone Project)
