Designed to provide special educators, social workers, parents and agency personnel with an understanding of the impact of mental retardation upon individuals at different ages in various settings. Explores the historical, psychological and educational aspects of mental retardation. Special consideration given to legislation and litigation, effective techniques in educational methods and materials, employment services and community resources.

Acquaints students with the identification and characteristcs of gifted and talented; the educational goals, objectives and the curriculum content. Specialists and community resources for the gifted will be utilized.

Explores the historical, psychological and educational aspects of learning disabilities. Emphasis will be on diagnosis and identification, and intervention strategies based on the learning, behavior, social and emotional characteristics of learning disabled students.

This course is designed to provide a current overview of the field of education for children and adolescents with behavioral disorders. It will include discussion of programming for students with traumatic brain injuries. Topics addressed are diagnosis and screening procedure, the incidence of emotional disturbances, factors influencing these disturbances, treatment alternatives, intervention and prevention strategies.

Designed to assist teachers, parents and grandparents, school administrators, guidance counselors, school psychologists, physical education teachers, music, speech, occupational and physical therapists, school nurses, college professor and teaching assistants in understanding the characteristics of autism. This information includes: current definition and diagnosis criteria; state-of-the-art behavioral and educational strategies; effective supportive service/therapy techniques; nutritional information and planning for community placement.

Orientation meeting that is required for students registered for GSPED 690. It is held each semester prior to the student's placement in the field. Provides information regarding require- ments and procedures for the practicum and is a prerequisite for 690.
