    This course will focus a student in the area of forensic nursing in which they propose to practice. An expert forensic nurse will serve as the mentor for the student.

    The purpose of this course is to prepare nurses to interface with the legal system. The course is designed to give the student a broad overview of the legal process and the roles of the lawyer and forensic specialist and the rules of conduct that guide them. Content of the classes includes reviews of our criminal and civil justice institutions and procedures, role of the lawyer, the expert and the forensic scientist, the role of other professionals in the identification, collection and presentation of forensic evidence, and ethics and the forensic scientist.

    This course broadly examines the function of forensic science professionals and highlights the recognition, collection, analysis and preservation of physical evidence. The study of forensic sciences includes an overview of various scientific applications of chemistry, biology, physics, and geology in such areas as forensic pathology, psychology, odontology, anthropology, entomology, psychiatry and engineering. Access to services, scope of work, accreditation and Board Certification are discussed within the framework of the forensic expert.

    This course focuses on the processes of trial preparation and trial, emphasizing the role of witnesses in the preparation of fact witnesses in the presentation of fact evidence and expert testimony. In addition to the assigned reading for this course, students will participate in various ways: question and answer sessions, preparing an in-class report of an occurrence and simulated courtroom situations, such as testifying from the witness stand. An overview of the Federal Rules of Evidence concerning the use of experts, experts' reports, and expert testimony is discussed.

    This course will consist of an intensive examination of criminal law and procedures as well as laboratory testing and procedures. Classes will be conducted at both the Law School and the Allegheny County Coroner's Office laboratories. An in-depth overview of criminal law and procedure is presented.

    This course introduces civil applications of forensic science and the judicial process. Wrongful death claims and damage calculations, accident reconstruction, business fraud, accounting, mental capacity, toxic torts and strict liability, real estate, intellectual property, family law, personal injury claims, tax, antitrust and securities cases will be discussed. A special focus examines the detection of child and elder abuse.

    This course will be used to illustrate the use and promise of the sciences in pursuit of civil and criminal justice. A series of case studies will be reviewed that enlightened professionals and scholars nationwide on the use and reach of the forensic scienced in the law. Special problems and case studies will be presented. The application of forensic science and the law in leading criminal and civil cases will be examined.

    This course examines models of psychiatric-mental health nursing from a holistic perspective and uses theory from nursing, related sciences, and relevant research to develop theoretical frame- works for guiding advanced nursing practice. Clinical therapeutics focuses on individual mental health and individual functioning. Theories and research about individual stengths and dysfunction are examined. Clinical therapeutics focus on the use of interventions for maintaining functional and altering dysfunctional patterns of responses within the individual.

    This clinical practicum includes clinical practice, experiential seminar, and supervision. Knowledge from the theory course is applied to clinical settings. Clinical applications focus on experiences in individual therapy with various mental health problems in a variety of settings including medication management and using the DSM in practice. Opportunities are available for collaboration with other mental health professionals.

Theories and research about family strengths and dysfunctions are examined.
