ENGL 560: History of English Language
3.00 Credits
Duquesne University
English, like its nearest relatives, the Germanic languages, is a member of the Indo-European family of languages. This course will identify many of the features that English shares with other Indo-European languages and trace the development of English from the earliest written records to recent times. We will study the ways in which geography, conquest, cultural interaction, and the passage of time have changed the pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary of English. We will do some introductory study of Old and Middle English, but no prior knowledge of these earlier stages of the language is necessary.
