This course is designed to influence strategies for learning and teaching science. Learning is an active participant role for all ages. This class invites the student to become actively involved in the learning associated with acquiring science content knowledge and teaching science to students. The National Science Education Standards (NSES) state that "teachers must use an inquiry-based approach to teaching science." This course affords the opportunity to experience and model "hands-on/minds on" strategies to use in teaching inquiry-based science. In providing different strategies to teaching science, the students will be able to develop and re?ne instructional approaches that will meet the National and Pennsylvania Content Standards for Science and Technology, Environment and Ecology. (PHY 120 and ELE 386 are taken concurrently and offered only in the fall. ELE 387 and BIO 121 are required as the second semester counterpart to this course.) 1.5 credits

This course of study deals with techniques of teaching reading and language arts including listening and speaking, language development, the reading process and the writing process. Children's literature including poetry, responding to literature, grammar, punctuation, reading assessments and current reading research will also be emphasized. Students will learn how to integrate the language arts in the content areas. The Pennsylvania Standards and key vocabulary related to the PRAXIS will be emphasized. Offered fall. 3 credits

This course will provide procedures, strategies, and curriculum materials to introduce and reinforce mathematical concepts. Practical demonstrations and individual projects will be an important component of the course. Related ?eldwork is recommended. this course is required for teacher certi?cation. Offered fall. 3 credits

Senior Educational Studies majors are offered the opportunity to complete an internship in cooperation with an accredited private school. This is a supervised senior field experience. Each internship requires a placement of seven weeks, teaching under the supervision of a qualified cooperating teacher and College supervisior. Praticums continue throughout the semester with conferences, placement and certificaton procedures. Prerequisite: limited to seniors. Students must meet the Education Division acceptancen GPA and submit the applications for placements to the Director of Student Teaching six (6) months prior to the start of the internship semester. Grading procedures are published in the Internship Handbook. This course is graded only as pass/fail. Offered each fall and spring. 6 credits

Student teaching and practicum includes two seven-week sessions of actual teaching at the primary level, under supervision of cooperating teacher and College supervisor. One of these seven-week sessions can be taken at the pre-school level (ECE 490). Practicum continues throughout the semester with conferences, placement, and certification procedures discussed. Prerequisite: limited to seniors. Students must meet the Education Division acceptance GPA and submit the application for student teaching to the Director of Student Teaching six (6) months prior to the start of the student teaching semester. Grading standards are published in the Student Teaching Handbook. This course is graded only as pass/fail. Offered each fall and spring. 6-12 credits semester. ENG 100 is a developmental writing course that introduces students from any discipline to the fundamentals of composition including: considerations of audience, thesis development, organization of ideas, methods of argument, revision, and copy-editing for grammatical correctness. Assignments include common forms of college writing-such as the personal, expository, and argumentative essays-and are designed to support student writing in other academic courses. The use of various instructional modalities (including computer-based instruction) will apply. While especially valuable for first-year writers, ENG 100 can be taken by upper classmen who would benefit from enhanced writing instruction. Course does not ful?ll the College writing requirement. Students are not allowed to withdraw from the course, except in cases of documented exigencies. Permission of the English department chair is required for withdrawal. Offered fall and spring. 3 credits

An introduction to the writing and thinking strategies necessary for success in college. Includes review of and practice in the fundamentals of composition and development of critical thinking skills through personal, expository, and argumentative essays related to a specific theme. Some of the themes for the fall semester sections include: The Words of your Worlds: Writing about Language and Identity; A War of Words: Writing about Gender and Language; Writing about Sports and Society; Honey from Stone: Writing about the Natural World; Heroes of the Media Age: Writing about Presidential Candidates; Moses and Messiahs: Writing about Superheroes of the Bible; and The Language of the Heart: Writing about Sacred Literature. Course is required of all first-year students unless exempt by the department. students unless exempt by the department. Students are not allowed to withdraw from the course except in cases of documented exigencies. In all such cases, permission from the Composition Coordinator is required to withdraw from the course. Any student who is not exempt from the course and who does not successfully complete the course in the fall semester is required to take the course again in the spring semester of the student's first year.
