Particular attention is given to sex role socialization, mechanisms for the maintenance of a sex-based division of labor, and the social basis of movements to redefine traditional sex roles. This course will start with a broad and global focus on childhood; how it is defined and viewed in several countries around the world. We will then examine a brief history of childhood in the United States and continue with a look at childhood in contemporary US society focusing on the socialization of children (race, class, gender, etc.), education and public policies that affect children and the families in which they live. We finish the course with a look on how globalization might be changing our view and treatments of children.
