SOC 301A: Spec Topics: Police & Society
3.00 Credits
Cabrini University
This course will explore how the police is a multifunctional service agency equipped to respond to civic problems and to fight crime. Their strategic position at the gateway of the criminal justice process, their numerical strength in comparison with that of other criminal justice agencies, and their constant contact with the public give the police prominence in the criminal justice system. While the role of police is paramount to the operation of the criminal justice system, there is disagreement on the political and social role police play in a democratic society. As well, the potential abuse of discretionary power among the police has become an area for considerable concern and debate. Thus, this course will lay the foundation for the role of police in society. Furthermore, it will explore how social and political influences play a part in the institution of policing and conflicts that may arise from such circumstances.
