This is a field ecology course being offered in collaboration with Ecology Project International. Part of the course will take place in Costa Rica where students will collaborate with sea turtle biologists and local Costa Rican communities to monitor a population of critically endangered leatherback sea turtles on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Data collected during the course will be utilized by scientists to improve conservation efforts for leatherback sea turtles. Under the leadership of local experts every student will conceive, develop, analyze, and present a field-based research project. Students also will attend biology, tropical ecology, art, and journaling classes. Open to non-science majors. Prerequisite: Completion of quantitative literacy requirement. One and one-half hours lecture, 10-day study abroad experience. Offered as needed. 4 credits

This course will focus on the study of the European Union. We will look at the aims, the results, and the future of the European Union as well as the European Monetary system. We will discuss the framework of the Union extensively. Students will tour two countries, Belgium and the Netherlands, and 4 major cities. They will have the opportunity to compare cultures at the same time learn about the history of the European Union. They will have a chance to examine the countries and the people who influenced the creation of the European Union. Students will study issues regarding the enlargement of the European and Union and discuss the use of currency. Students will tour the European Parliament where 750 elected representatives meet on behalf of the 450 million citizens of the European Union to debate legislation on these very issues. We will discuss the Single European Act and the Maastricht Treaty and have the opportunity to visit Maastricht where we will see the Provincial Government Buildings where the Treaty was signed. (Course registration by permissiion of the instructor only) 3 creidts.

The Spain of Cervantes: Spanish Language and Culture Studies in Castilla/LaMancha, is open to students of all majors. This course is designed for the student who wishes to gain a broader understanding of the language and culture of Spain, while at the same time developing a deeper understanding of his/her own culture through a short-term travel experience abroad. Students will develop linguistic skills in the Spanish language and a deeper understanding of Spanish culture as a means of improving global awareness. Components of this course include pre-departure discussions and papers on selected readings, an experiential learning opportunity during an eight-day Study Tour to Spain, a language -immersion experience at a Spanish university, and a home-stay with a Spanish family. The course content will provide students with an in-depth opportunity to experience and appreciate another culture. (Course registration by permission of the instructor only) 3 credits
