This course creates a synthesis of the students' existing experiences and knowledge of behavior within organizations with new insights and learning. Both areas help students overcome problems and take advantage of opportunities in new and effective ways for achieving organizational goals. An interdisciplinary approach is taken, combining learning and concepts from the fields of social and organizational psychology, management, leadership skills, organizational design and development, and change theory. 3 credits

The purpose of this course is to impart the theories, concepts and, more important, the practical applications necessary for leaders to guide individuals, work units and organizations to the achievements of goals. In broad terms, successful leaders need to be able to 1) facilitate the growth and productivity of individuals, work groups and/or teams; and 2) create, recognize and act upon opportunities consistent with the vision, mission and goals of their respective organizations. 3 credits

Students in this course learn the basic concepts of organizational change, how to design structures and processes that are tailored to unique opportunities and environments, and how to create a vision that acts as a guiding beacon. Students learn how and when to involve stakeholders and consultants to build, grow and renew their organizations and themselves. 3 credits

Students learn the technical aspects of performance management, including quantitative measures and the use of information technologies and control systems. Students also learn the importance of the psycho-social aspects of performance management, including incentives, coaching and counseling skills, the alignment of performance objectives with recognition and reward systems, and the use of self-directed teams. 3 credits

This course combines philosophical perspectives with pragmatic considerations to help leaders grow and sustain organizational cultures which are sensitive and responsive to ethical considerations, growing diversity and shifting public expectations about corporate social responsibility. Students develop and test their points of view through lectures, case discussions, independent inquiry and guest presenters. Topical areas include creating multicultural organizations, establishing ethical and moral business practices, dealing with conflicts of values and belief systems, and determining the organization's social responsibility. Legal responsibilities and conflicts of interest are also discussed.
