This course focuses on the complex historical experience of African-Americans in American society from 1619 to the present. The early history of Africa and Africans is considered, as is the history of the African-American in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada. Topics considered include: the Atlantic Slave Trade, Slavery in America, the Civil War and Reconstruction, the life and times of Booker T. Washington, the involvement of African-Americans in the World Wars, the social and cultural history of the Harlem Renaissance, the epoch of Roosevelt, and the era of integration, civil rights, and the protests of the 1950s and 1960s. Tow semesters. Offered fall and spring. 3 credits
