Special attention will be paid to Philadelphia's central role in the colonial and revolutionary eras, to the ethnic diversity of Pennsylvania's society, to the conflicts between labor and industrialists in late nineteenth century western Pennsylvania, and to the evolution of city politics in twentieth century Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
