Chinese 310b: Comparative Modern Chinese Drama
1.00 Credits
Vassar College
This course chronologically traces the literary and cultural developments of modern Chinese drama since the early twentieth century to the present day with an emphasis on a comparative approach between the Eastern and Western dramatic traditions. Since the rise of modern Chinese drama cannot possibly be separated from the influence of Western theatre, we read dramatic texts from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan (in translation), as well as dramatic theories and plays by dramatists from the Continent and America. Works by August Strindberg, Henrik Ibsen, Eugene O'Neill, Arthur Miller, and Samuel Beckett are put into dialogue with each targeted Chinese play not only to better examine the reaction of Chinese dramatists and audiences to Western theatrical traditions, but also to portray how modern Chinese drama develops through the process of adopting, interacting, and even transforming Western theatre, which is reflective of the shaping of a national consciousness and a new aesthetic form. This course emphasizes the literary, productive, as well as performative aspects of each dramatic work. Ms. Hsiung. Prerequisite: one 200-level course in language, literature, culture, drama or Asian Studies, or permission of instructor.
