The course deals with the security aspect of information and data exchange on shared internetworks. The requirements of secure transfer include secrecy, integrity, authentication and non-repudiation. The mechanisms to fulfill these requirements are introduced including encryption algorithms that provide privacy, message authentication, and non-repudiation. Practical implementation of security on top of the three layers of the OSI reference model is highlighted. The various forms of attacks including intrusions, worms, viruses, Trojan horses and distributed attacks are discussed along with the defense mechanisms of firewalls and intrusion detection and prevention techniques.
