LSA 480: Seminar in Urban Design

This course is an exploration of literature and case studies that address the history, theories, principles and practice of 19th and 20th century North American and European urban design. The format includes readings, discussion and presentations, papers, and a three-day field trip. Fall. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. The course provides an overview and introduction to cultural landscape preservation and the general preservation movement in the United States. Philosophy, history, and legislation of the preservation movement will be presented. The focus will be on preservation terminology and application, standards, guidelines and procedures. Research, identification, evaluation of significance, and integrity and treatment of cultural resources will be explored. Limited enrollment. Spring. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.
