Other skills will also be used, such as reading, writing, and listening but primarily as helps for developing conversational ability. Attention will also be given to grammatical accuracy in conversation. By the end of this course with consistent effort and attendance, the student should be able to communicate about topics routinely encountered in Francophone cultures. The sequence provides students without prior exposure to the language with a sound basis for learning German as it is used today in its spoken and written forms. The goal of the sequence is proficiency in communication skills, with an emphasis on oral proficiency. The sequence also acquaints students with contemporary culture and life in the German-speaking countries. This course may be taken as the prerequisite for the German language/culture concentration and minor; the German language minor; and may be taken as an elective or for arts of expression credit.
