Focus will be on techniques and tools used to visualize and create clear, effective, well-crafted thumbnails and rough layouts. This 10-week, full-time experience gives students matriculated in the art and computer design program a sampling of the world of work in the applied art fi eld under the supervision of qualifi ed professionals such as production managers and art directors. Students complete a workbook as part of this experience. The experience must be satisfactorily completed before the student enrolls in the fi nal courses of the major. Using design concepts and practices learned in the fi rst level of the program, students work through steps of the design process, including defi nition and research of simple graphic design problems and development and presentation of solutions through clear, well-executed thumbnail sketches, roughs and comprehensive layouts. Students learn how to select printing papers and fi nishing methods. Major emphasis is given to verbal presentation of layout ideas, group production meetings and group critiques.
