A survey course covering a wide range of safety topics applicable to business, industry, construction and institutions. Included are the history and objectives of the safety profession; specific activities such as hazard evaluation, accident analysis and recordkeeping; and specialized topics such as material handling, workers compensation, fire protection and industrial hygiene. The course will enhance the knowledge of those with limited experience in safety while providing a basic understanding of the role of the safety profession for those with no experience.

It is designed to provide an overview of the basic concepts of Modern Safety Management Systems that are used to develop and maintain an effective safety program. It will aid present and future safety managers in developing a formal safety program. In particular, the following sections are covered: Introduction, Basic Safety Concepts and Methods, Principles of Safety Management, and Special Techniques, Problems and Auxiliary Functions. The students will prepare class assignments to reinforce their understanding of the concepts presented and gain actual experience in developing a formal Safety and Health program.
