This course is a cross-cultural sociological analysis of the institution of the family with an emphasis on the new challenges to relationships in our rapidly-changing technological society. Topics include research on dating, marriage preparation, cohabitation, marriage adjustments, pregnancy and parenting, divorce, remarriage, life cycle changes, and enrichment programs. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.) Prerequisite: ENG 099 or waiver through testing.

Discussions focus on ¿maleness/masculinity¿ and ¿femaleness/femininity¿ in their current, cross-cultural and historical forms. The origins, the implications and the social reproduction of gender are examined. How gender norms are both constructed and challenged in social institutions like the family, the economy, the political system, education, religion and the media are addressed. This course examines the concept of community, different approaches to understanding community, community and the quality of life, and studying the community.
