    This course focuses on special care needs and challenges of the special needs individual. Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to protect the special needs person from losing benefits; be able to write, interpret and use a letter of intent; understand the types of guardianship and be able to explain how guardianship works; understand the life care planning process and options, know about governemnt programs available to individuals with special needs; understand special needs trust accounts; understand how to correctly gift money without losing benefits; and be more effective in coordinating the needs of families and individuals with special needs.

    Families and caregivers of persons with special needs will want to take all steps possible to ensure that the future care and well-being of their family member or other dependent with special needs has been made as secure and comfortable as possible. The law provides us with tools to use in order to accomplish these purposes. Learn about these tools and how they mgiht best serve your situation as we consider the matter from the perspective of the family members' estates and the estate of the person with special needs. Provisions for medical care and the changes to the laws concerning powers of attorney which will become effective in September 2009 will also be discussed. The particular considerations and concerns of the non-traditional family (whatever that may be and if there is such a thing today) and non-traditional relationships (whatever those might be and if there are such relationships today) finding themselves in these situations will also be addressed.     The Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD) provides person-centered services, supports and advocacy to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. The goal of OMRDD is to help people with developmental disabilities achieve their personal best and attain the highest level of independence through individualized service programs. This course identifies some of the most commonly requested supports available throught the OMRDD system. (3 hours)

    This course will discuss the primary factors that influence behavior and provide information on how to effectively employ a variety of strategies to reinforce positive behaviors. Strategies for collecting objective and accurate information on behaviors that may be exhibited in a variety of environments and development of social skills by using strategies to modify the environment and/or facilitate commmunication will be discussed. (3 hours)

    This course will give an overview of the main behavioral characteristics of children with disabilities and the methods used to facilitate and support the development of appropriate behaviors and social skills in the school, home and community. Normal development sequences and the developmental gaps found in social skill development across autism spectrum will be reviewed. (3 hours)

Grief is a normal and natural process of working through the pain of a loss and it is a functional necessity. No one is immune from grief and it can come expectedly or suddenly. Substantial diversity exists in what is health grief, and you may even grieve differently now from how you grieved in your past. (3 hours/pending OASAS approval)

    This workshop will consist of an examination of services needed by those suffering from co-occuring disorder/dual diagnoses (primarily mental and/or developmental disorders and substance abuse disorders). We will explore issues pertaining to evaluation, assessment and treatment planning. Participants will learn the fundamentals of DSM-IV-TR differential diagnoses. (2.5 hours/pending OASAS approval)

    This presentation will help participants to feel more comfortable intervening in case of behavioral and emotional crises with multiple diagnosed clients. The Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention (SCIP-R) techniques will be especially emphasized. (2.5 hours/Pending OASAS approval)

    Learners in this workshop will examine HIV/AIDS counseling techniques and appropriate modifications for dual or multiply-diagnosed clients. Emphasis will be placed on explaining the course of the disease in mental-age-appropriate terms. (2.5 hours/Pending OASAS approval)
