Prerequisites: Math 102 or higher; and junior level standing or consent of the instructor. This course will address selected concepts and principles in epidemiology and associated quantitative applications of importance to health services managers. Particular emphasis will be placed on the integration of epidemiology, biostatistics, and the management process; that is, planning, organizing, directing, and controlling resources to address typical public health concerns encountered by community health care organizations. 3 lecture hours.

Topics will include reception, telephone management, billing and collections, banking and payroll procedures, diagnosis and procedural coding, insurance claims processing, and related issues. 3 lecture hours.

This course analyses the roles played by long term care facilities, nursing homes, home health organizations, continuing care retirement communities, and those organizations which deal with chronic health care concerns. It also offers an in-depth analysis of the nature and operations of managed care in the United States. 3 lecture hours.

This course will integrate accounting, finance, and marketing as it specifically applies to health services delivery. Particular emphasis will be placed on the unique challenges associated with cost management, financing, and marketing health care services in the United States. Topics will include managerial and fund accounting in health care organizations, the unique financial role served by third-party reimbursement arrangements, financial statement analysis, cash-flow manCourse Descriptions 457 agement, budgeting, pricing strategies, short term and long term financing strategies, the nature of health care markets and health care consumers, as well as research and strategies used to promote health care services. 3 lecture hours.

Prerequisites: MGMT 250 and 341; and junior level standing or consent of the instructor. This course will integrate the principles of operations, human resources, and quality management as it specifically applies to the management and delivery of health care services. The course will focus on the principles of operations management emphasizing the analysis, development, improvement, and implementation of processes designed to effectively and efficiently deliver services to the health care consumer; the human resources management functions that are unique to health care organizations to include health professional credentialing and staffing, as well as quality management principles used to assess and improve selected health services outcomes. 3 lecture hours.

Prerequisite: Junior level standing or consent of the instructor. This class is designed to introduce students to health care policy in this country. It will explore the concept of public and health care policies. Current theoretical models will be discussed. 3 lecture hours.

Investigation of the factors and forces at work in the setting of health care costs both private and public and the impacts of those costs. Demand and supply concerns, reimbursement systems, insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, governmental regulations, liability issues, accessibility, budgeting processes and planning, and human resources concerns discussed. Health care financial management tools and techniques will also be presented and utilized. 3 lecture hours.

This course will cover the concepts and principles associated with strategic management as well as the management of innovation and change in health care delivery systems. Topics will include the strategic management process, the development of competitive advantage, facilitation of the change process, and methods of fostering innovations in the provision of health services. 3 lecture hours.

Prerequisite: Junior level standing or consent of the instructor. The capstone/internship experience provides students an opportunity to gain valuable insight and understanding of current topics while they participate in a supervised experience in managerial functions within a selected health care organization. It is a course intended to synthesize and integrate the knowledge and skills of the major course work and the general and liberal education course work. Students will be required to complete a major research project aimed at addressing a philosophic, social, political, economic, or historical problem connected to health care management. Ac- tivities in the course will include a major research paper and an oral presentation based on significant research and project results. These activities will be opportunities for students to display the content knowledge, research skills, critical thinking, affective learning, and presentation skills needed to be life-long learners. 10 lecture/internship hours.

Prerequisite: Acceptance to the Health Information Management Program. Introduces philosophy and ethical relationship of records. Reviews health care delivery system, analysis, admitting office procedures, organization and responsibilities of medical staff, numbering and filing systems, registers and accreditation standards. 2 lecture hours, 3 laboratory hours.
