4 credits, 3 lecture hours, 3 lab hours This course is the continuation of Human Anatomy and Physiology I. The course focuses on the gross and microscopic structure and function of the sense organs, endocrine system, blood and cardiovascular systems, lymphatic and immune systems, and the respiratory, urinary, digestive and reproductive systems. The laboratory portion of the course focuses on practical applications of the lecture material including a number of diagnostic and laboratory tests and procedures. Students are responsible for the dissection of numerous preserved specimens. Course is required for the Practical Nurse certificate program. PREREQUISITE: NS-111

4 credits, 3 lecture hours, 3 lab hours This course explores the world of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, protistans and other microbes. Immunology is also studied. Emphasis is placed on the nature and behavior of these organisms and their interrelationship with the human body in health and disease. The principles of prevention and control of infectious diseases are presented. Laboratory exercises develop techniques in the preparation, handling, and identification of a variety of microbial cultures. Course is required for the Practical Nurse certificate program. 6 credits Part I of this course concentrates on the needs of the patients in a variety of health care settings where direct nursing care is provided. Course content is applied to both simulated and actual patient situations. This is the first nursing practice experience where theoretical content in prior courses is integrated with the application of basic nursing care concepts. The second component focuses on bio-psychosocial models as a perspective for viewing health promotion of persons and groups experiencing vulnerabilities and alterations in mental health across the lifespan. 6 credits The course has two components; interactions with the child bearing/ rearing family during pregnancy, labor, delivery, the puerperium and the care of the infant through adolescence. Topics for discussion in each component include social issues that lead to the disintegration of the family as a unit. Clinical learning experience will take place in a variety of settings. 7 credits The course stresses the basic concepts of care for patients with acute and/or long term health problems. Students will be expected to spend extensive time in the laboratory practicing skills and reviewing software as needed. 7 credits The student will learn communication and other skills to work with patients and significant others of normal and altered mental status. Using the nursing process to assess, analyze and plan care to meet the needs of the adults though the life span. The nursing focus is on the care of the adolescents, adults and the aged. Aspects of the psychosocial care are interwoven. Alterations in psychosocial development and relevant nursing interventions are analyzed with emphasis on self-understanding and use of self as a therapeutic tool. Complete assessment, physical and psychosocial of adults is emphasized. The approach to patient care will reflect the student's ability to implement care based on the significance of ethical/legal issues, culture, ethnicity and how one adapts to the community. 7 credits The student will use acquired and new knowledge the implement care for clients in the childbearing phase of the life cycle. The nursing process will be used to assess analyze and develop nursing diagnoses and to plan and implement care. Actual and potential problems will be identified. Patient and family responses to care will be identified and evaluated to determine the effectiveness of nursing intervention. Critical thinking skills will be developed to determine priorities. The roles of the ADN will be further developed legal ethical research diversity and potential accountability are integral aspects of this course. 7 credits Advanced medical surgical concepts acute care, long term care and multisystem failure are addressed. Elements of community are integrated. The nursing process is imple mented to assess and identify nursing diagnoses plan and intervene to resolve actual or potential healthcare problems and based upon patients responses evaluate the effects of these interventions. The clients focus is adult patients with acute and longterm problems and their families. Critical Thinking skills will be utilized effectively in prioritizing interventions. The roles of the associate degree nurse will be integrated. The student will incorporate legal, ethical, research, accountability and diversityconcepts into the all written and clinical components. 3 credits This course introduces the science of nutrition and its application to human health across the life span. The course emphasizes the nutritional aspect of disease prevention, and an early risk reduction approach to managing chronic disease in an aging population. Current approaches to nutritional management and its importance in the care of clients with gastrointestinal disease, heart disease, diabetes, mellitus, renal disease, surgery, cancer and AIDS will be explored. Community nutrition needs with an emphasis on weight management and an acknowledgement of the enriched food patterns which have resulted from increasing multi-ethnic diversity will be examined.
