In 1987, Dana Gioia wrote a provocative essay titled "Can Poetry Matter?" Although responses have varied since the original publication date, the answer is, for this course, yes, poetry does matter and always has. From childhood verses to political statements, American poetry has played an important part in society. This class will present a brief overview of the influences of American poetry. Corequisite: Students must be registered for either a Week With Award-Winning Writers or Poets Laureate of the US.

Besides looking at the timeline of poets laureate, this class will discuss various specific works and projects, such as Billy Collins' Poetry 180 and Ted Kooser's American Life in Poetry. This course will also inlcude a trip to Chautauqua Institution to hear past Poet Laureate Billy Collins on July 10th.

This course provides a unique opportunity to see and hear five major writers who will be platform presenters at the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater (July 7-11). The course will focus on enhancing appreciation of the diversity of the writers' works. Essayist, author, playwright, and television commentator Roger Rosenblatt will be joined by his friends and fellow authors E.L. Doctorow, Joyce Carol Oates, and Amy Tan, poet Billy Collins and cartoonist Garry Trudeau.
