Most people tend to think that when it comes to sex, sexuality, or gender, that people ""just do what comes naturally."" However, a cross-cultural perspective exploring these topics reveals that sex and gender identities are not solely driven by biology - in fact, they are shaped by, and driven by, culture and learned ideas and customs. This course will look at sex, sexuality, and gender practices and concepts from cultures around the world, and students will be able to compare and contrast people's understanding of the body and its development, how people come to understand their own sex and gender characteristics, and the place each one of us occupies in society in terms of our sex and gender behaviors.
