History, literature, media studies, and design are combined to develop and refine a critical vocabulary for articulating the aesthetics of games, including both the distinctive features unique to games and those shared with other forms of media and culture. Textual analyses, history, and game construction will be emphasized, as well as a critique of a canon of significant and influential games. Open only to majors in game design and immersive media. ¿Special Topics: Rod Serling¿s Dimension of Imagination¿ (TVR 20800-99, 3 credits, Fall 2006 only) Taught by Gordon C. Webb, Assistant Professor of Communications at Ithaca College. This course will examine a variety of social, moral, political and ethical issues as dealt with by one of television¿s most influencial and best-known writers. Throughout his career, Rod Serling struggled with how to craft powerful human stories within the limitations of sponsor control... censorship... and the pressure of audience ratings. Designed for a broad range of students with varied interests -- ths course will make extensive use of video and script material from the Rod Serling Archive at Ithaca and will include discussion of British programming (such as ¿The Goon Show¿) which `pushed the envelope¿ and faced challenges similar to Serling¿s head-on.

Fundamentals of electronic game design including rule design, play mechanics, social game interactions, and the integration of visual and audio as well as text elements and how games function to create experiences. A critical review and analysis of theories, policies, and issues in international and intercultural communication, as well as the flow of information among nations of the world through traditional and contemporary communication channels. Includes interpersonal communications, the mass media, satellite communications, diplomacy and international conventions. Readings and discussions of research studies demonstrate the interconnections of communication and international relations. Emphasis is placed on the impact of the flow of information on political, economic, cultural, legal, and social aspects of various countries and regions. Prerequisites: One course in the social sciences; sophomore standing. 3 credits. (F)
