Experiential learning involving the theory and practice of group interaction. The student will be exposed to the dynamics of building relationships with members of a group and exploring directions of mutual group interest. Twenty-five hours of observation in approved speech and hearing clinics, hospitals, schools and/or private practices. Students will be expected to keep a log of activities, submit reports of observations and cooperate with the speech-language pathologists and/or audiologists that they observe. Planned seminars will be used to discuss observations, explore opportunities in communication disorders, and to aid students in defining career goals. This course also fulfills the requirements set forth by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association for observation prior to clinical practicum. Prerequisite: SCS 368. 3 credits. FS

The theory and practice of effective interviewing for both interviewer and interviewee will be discussed: creating rapport, barriers to interviewing effectiveness, styles of listening, categories of interview questions, effective verbal and nonverbal interviewing behaviors, and directive versus nondirective approaches. Students will participate in different types of evaluated interview settings, such as information-gathering employment, persuasive, problem-solving and counseling interviews. 3 credits. AY

This course examines the conditions that influence the speaking and listening habits of the aging, identifies the physiological, emotional and environmental factors that contribute to the deterioration of communication abilities, and delineates methods of helping the elderly to improve their patterns of communication. 3 credits. Independent research designed to enable the student to examine in depth a specific area of speech communication studies. Work to be done under supervision of faculty adviser. Prerequisite: SCS 101, junior standing and permission of department chair. 3 credits. FS

Participation in supervised field work in speech communication. Regular meetings with the internship supervisor are required. An analysis paper detailing the work experience and its relation to speech communication theory will also be required. 3 credits. FS

This course focuses on the special problems in human communication that characterize the interaction of peoples from varied ethnic backgrounds. The assumptions, language patterns, non-verbal behaviors and media techniques are some of the factors studied in the lifestyles of religious minorities, non-whites, the economically deprived, senior citizens, children, and those born outside North America. Not open to students who have taken SCS 346. Same course as SOC 4103. 4 credits. N

A practical study of the communication process as it relates to the fields of business management and professional practice. This course is concerned with the psychological concepts and the physical techniques needed for effective performance in public speaking, professional and business presentational speaking, interviewing and conference work in business and industrial situations. Not open to students who have taken SCS 304. Prerequisite: SCS 101 or SCS 1103 or permission of chair. 4 credits. F
