While focused primarily on the black experience in the United States, Afro- Caribbean issues will also be addressed. This course offers an experiential exploration into the many aspects of Appalachian culture. Along with academic analysis of this culture, students live for a week in a rural Appalachian community and participate in a variety of service activities with and for the poor of that area. An integration of the service experience and academic study is achieved through journal writing, group discussion/analysis, an oral presentation and an integrative paper. 3 credits. N

It traces the interaction between scientific discoveries and cultural developments, and identifies key figures and ideas responsible for the transformation of basic aspects of Western society at various times throughout its history. 4 credits. A video course, "Ethics in America" focuses on suchcontemporary ethical conflicts as the ethics of corporate take-overs, ethical standards for public service, the balance between the public's right to know and the individual's right to privacy, and issues such as AIDS, the homeless and child abuse. Case studies are presented to help analyze and reflect upon ethical dilemmas and to understand the process for ethical decision making. 4 credits. N

This Guided Independent Study course investigates leadership in complex organizations, addressing the subject from three related viewpoints: (1) the systems view, an approach to understanding and managing organizations, stressing the inter-dependence of people and functions and focusing on the organization as a whole; (2) the behavioral viewpoint, emphasizing the interactions of individuals and groups and how their behavior affects organizational performance; and (3) the management practice approach, addressing the actual functions and activities of persons in organizations. 6 credits. An exploration of the basic effects of vocational selection: the student will be assisted in developing practical, meaningful and realistic insights into the nature of making a career choice in today's worfd. Special emphasis will be placed on the relevancy of a college education and the application of certain academic majors to specific and general career areas. The student will be exposed to those activities and procedures required to become academically or technically proficient in a particular skill and learn how entry into employment is facilitated.
