Semester Hours: 3 Once a year Study of the methods, assumptions and limits of natural science with illustrations from the history of science. Topics include explanation, laws, prediction, confirmation, theories, the status of theoretical entitles, theoretical reduction, concept formation and the problem of demarcation. Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: PHI 10 or 154 or permission of instructor.

Semester Hours: 3 Periodically This course surveys recent and current philosophical discussions of biology. Likely topics include debates about the reality of species, races, and ecosystems; how and what genes explain; analysis of concepts like adaptation and fitness; evolutionary explanations of morality; assumptions about what's natural and unnatural in ecology. Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: It is recommended that students taking this course have taken at least one previous course in either philosophy or biology.

Semester Hours: 3 Periodically Traditional philosophical problems surrounding some basic conceptions in the Western monotheistic religions. Primary attention given to three broad topics: To what extent can belief in God be rationally justified ; What, if anything, does the fact of evil tell us about God's nature ; Is religious discourse ordinary speech or in some way metaphorical or symbolic Traditional arguments for and against the existence of God are discussed. Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: PHI 10 or RELI 12 or permission of instructor.

Semester Hours: 3 Periodically Survey course of the seven major schools of Indian philosophy, along with the Japanese School of Zen Buddhism and the Chinese philosophy of Taoism. Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: (Formerly PHIL 63.)

Semester Hours: 3 Fall, Spring An introduction to basic issues concerning society and politics. Some topics discussed are the origins of society and its proper organization as well as perspectives on justice, rights and obligations. Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: (Formerly PHIL 4.)

Semester Hours: 3 Periodically Examination of classical and contemporary theories of human nature. Considers persons as moral beings, as seekers of knowledge, and as social and political animals. Emphasis on the connection between theories of human nature and conceptions of the natural world. Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: Credit given for this course or New College HPG 7, not both. (Formerly PHIL 6.)

Semester Hours: 4 Fall, Spring Fundamental laws and principles of mechanics, heat, sound, light, electricity and magnetism. Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: Prerequisite or corequisites: MATH 71, 72. Credit given for this course or PHYS 1A, but not for both. Students must take 11B concurrently unless credit has already been received for the equivalent. 11A applies toward the natural science distribution requirement only upon successful completion of the corresponding laboratory course 11B.

Semester Hours: 4 Fall, Spring Fundamental laws and principles of mechanics, heat, sound, light, electricity and magnetism. Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: PHYS 11A. Prerequisite or corequisites: MATH 71, 72. Engineering students are exempt from taking 12B, with approval of adviser. Credit given for this course or PHYS 2A, but not for both. Students must take 12B concurrently unless credit has already been received for the equivalent. 12A applies toward the natural science distribution requirement only upon successful completion of the corresponding laboratory course 12B.
