It will trace the foundations of new cities and the "Islamization" of older ones, and historically examine the role of religious principles and behaviour on urban form. We will also examine material and cultural differences internal to the Islamic world that contribute to its dazzling diversity of urban settings. Though interdisciplinary in approach, a major focus will be on architecture and urban form.
